Tues. June 29
This morning we went on a 6 hr. glacier cruise to Kenai Fjords National Park. As we left the harbor it was cloudy and misty, but absolutely beautiful! We went out into Resurrection Bay where we saw sea otters and lions, humpback whales, lots of birds and porpoises that were bow riding with our boat. There were panoramic views of deep carved glacial valleys and fjords that were the most brilliant shade of green we ever saw. There were snow covered glaciers all around us . . . this is truly the most spectacular scenery we’ve ever seen. We both agree that it beats Haleakela Crater on Maui, Waimea Canyon on Kauai and the Blue Mountains of Australia! We just can’t get over the abundant natural beauty . . .it’s just incredible and something everyone should see in their lifetime.
So, just when we think it can’t get any more spectacular, it does! The boat pulls into a cove and right up to a calving glacier. The sound starts out like echoing thunder and then pieces of glacier hit the water with a tremendous boom . . . it was surreal. Later tonight we are hiking out to Exit Glacier (1 mile out) and then having dinner at the famous “Salmon Bake” restaurant located at the base of the glacier.
** I uploaded this post on Tue. June 30 at 7 pm Alaska time. We pulled the RV right next to the Seward public library in town and got free wi-fi!
Temp: 66 degrees
Wildlife sightings: Sea lions, otters, porpoises, whales, birds, rabbits
