Anchorage - Day 2

Thurs. June 25

The jet lag is hitting us today. We woke up at
4:30 a.m. ready to go! The sun is still shining bright, but the air is brisk and calm. We hear that Farrah Fawcet has died and we reminisce. Chuck mentions deaths come in threes . . .Ed McMahon, Farrah . . . we contemplate who will be #3.

We can't pick up the RV until noon so we head downtown Anchorage for breakfast at the Snow City Cafe. It's a very popular place for locals and tourists. We have an excellent breakfast and then walk over to Resolution Park for a sweeping view of the Cook Inlet and the Port of Anchorage.

The downtown area is crowded with tourists this morning. We hear german, french and spanish being spoken. Chuck stops to chat with everyone . . .tourists as well as all the locals he knows. People are posing and snapping pictures everywhere. The town is filled with flowers . . .very bright, abundant flowers. There are several fur shops, and lot's of souvenir shops that we wander thru. We head over to the Town Square and enjoy the flowing fountain and vibrant floral gardens. There is an immense whale mural here by the famous whale artist Wyland. Chuck gets a text message that Michael Jackson has died of a heart attack . . .people on the streets are hearing it too. So there is #3.

We head over to the RV rental location. We sign all the papers and then Emily takes us to the RV for instructions and a walk thru. It's time for the guys to really pay attention, but Chuck is too busy flirting with Emily so I'm hoping that Santos is remembering all her instructions! There's lots of things to know about on the outside of the RV . . . water, propane, batteries, black tank, grey tank, storage compartments, hoses. On the inside there is even more . . . stove, refrigerator, microwave, toilet, shower, furnace, a/c (we tell her to skip that instruction!). We're out of the RV lot in about 30 minutes and on our way to Fred Meyer for groceries and supplies. After we settle in, we head to dinner at the Burrito King for Mexican food. We're pretty beat and it's only 9 pm . . . so the jet lag continues.

Temp: 61 degrees
Wildlife Sighting: Alaska Husky Sled Dog w/pups

Anchorage Area Map
Overwhelmingly the largest state in the U.S., Alaska is a land of vast wilderness, towering mountain ranges, and some of the most diverse plant and wildlife in the United States. The sheer size of Alaska is so large that much the eastern seaboard of the U.S., including Appalachia, could fit comfortably inside its borders. The rugged terrain of Alaska is home to the tallest mountain in North America, Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet.
